Is there a difference between a Realtor and Real Estate Agent?

People use the terms Realtor and Real Estate Agent often referring to the person who is representing them in a real estate transaction. But is there a difference between both terms? Not every real estate agent is a realtor.

Who is a Realtor?

A realtor can be a real estate agent, a broker agent or a managing broker, or even just an exclusive buyer’s agent.  Every realtor is a member of the National Association of Realtors. A Realtor must also subscribe to the Realtor Code of Ethics, which is a long code, consisting of 17 articles. You can read the details here. As a Realtor, one must swear to uphold and adhere to the code of ethics that include strictly enforced standards of practice. The code of ethics was put in place for realtors in an attempts to morally regulate the industry, and while it does not enforce that the realtor must be fair to all parties, but the Realtor must be honest and must pledge to put the interest of their client above their own.
